Learning Health Systems Discussion Forum

The concept of a learning health system (LHS) is defined (IOM/NAM) by its alignment of multiple stakeholders, ability to integrate systems experience, real-world data and external evidence and apply that knowledge into the practice within a culture of continuous, collaborative improvement. Biomedical and health informatics, as the field concerned with data, information, and knowledge applied to human health, is essential to advancing LHS with the ultimate goals of the quadruple aim including improving human health, decreasing the cost of care, providing patient-centered care, and decreasing clinician burnout. The purpose of this Discussion Forum is to help develop an LHS informatics community and approaches for informatics to meaningfully contribute to this transformative initiative.
